Julian Rosefeldt’s Global Soap project is a vast collection of soap opera images archiving housewives’ favourites from all over the globe. Highlighting the TV template of formulaic plotlines and fluency in the universal language of schmaltz, Rosefeldt’s Soap photos present multiple panels of characters playing out identikit roles. Cropped to the format of actor’s publicity shots, the groupings of Rosefeldt’s subjects read like multi-national casting calls for archetypal villains and victims.

Rosefeldt’s project issues of racial and national difference give way to the fashion of globalised sameness. The perception of ‘other’ is removed from ethnic preconception with each figure identified through their familiar dramatic parts rather than their outward appearance.

December 3rd, 2009Discover the World’s Art in Edinburgh
October 26th, 2009Edinburgh is noted for being a cultured city and as well as annually celebrating the performing arts every summer when the city becomes a stage for thousands of performers taking part in The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, it also boasts a large number of museums and art galleries containing some of the world’s finest art pieces.
The Edinburgh National Gallery on Princes Street is currently home to The Discovery of Spain exhibition, which runs until mid-October 2009. Assorted works painted by well-known Spanish artists and owned by British collectors will be on display including items by Picasso, Goya, El Greco and Velázquez. Timed to coincide with the 2009 Edinburgh Festival this spectacular collection is billed as the highlight of the National Galleries of Scotland contribution to the event and can only be viewed in Edinburgh.
Also on display in the exhibition will be works produced by noted British artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries including David Roberts, Arthur Melville and Sir David Wilkie. Their inspirational oils, watercolours and drawings were all influenced by a love of Spanish culture and complement the works on display from the famous Spanish artists.
Other exhibitions in Edinburgh include the Artist Rooms running until early November at The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, featuring works from famous contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol and Ellen Gallagher. If you are interested in visiting the city to witness either of these unique art exhibitions first hand, bear in mind that Edinburgh hotels may well be busy because of the Festival, so secure your room as early as you can.
For those who prefer performing arts then the city presents a fine selection courtesy of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival which is packed with a varied selection of dance, music, theatre and comedy. Officially the largest arts festival in the world the Fringe is an annual event that takes place during the month of August. Incredibly popular it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and performers from all over the globe. During summer 2009 the Fringe will feature over 30,000 separate performances of 2,000 different shows in almost 250 venues! The beauty of the Fringe is that well-known established actors and comedians perform alongside up-and-coming amateurs, all adding to the sense of adventure and fun.
In addition to the arts Edinburgh offers visitors a great deal more, including some terrific historic sites such as Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street, and The Royal Mile. It also boasts some of the best shopping north of London; the perfect destination for a cultured, relaxed and enjoyable weekend away.

Exploring The World Of Art In Glasgow
September 29th, 2009Art galleries contain all kinds of delights from all stages in history. While there are paintings and drawings by well known artists to look for and appreciate, there are also plenty of more modern works to enjoy.
Lots of cities have plenty of art galleries to explore too, and Glasgow has some wonderful additions to its collection of galleries. If you are heading there in the near future, try some of these for size.
Firstly there is the Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park. This is so called because the city owns the artwork as a direct result of having been given it by Sir William Burrell. There are thousands of items to look at and they don’t just cover paintings either. There are tapestries and much more besides to browse around and appreciate.
Elsewhere in Glasgow you can visit the Compass Gallery. This is worth a mention in particular because it is one of the few galleries that focus more on young artists, rather than those who have already succeeded in their careers.
The gallery has been going for three decades now, and one of the most intriguing parts about it is that it has a rich mix of artists whose work it shows. As such a visit is definitely recommended, because there is bound to be something there that appeals to you.
Next up you could try the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art. As the name would suggest you won’t be surrounded by any classic painters from years gone by. Instead you can delve into the art world as it is now.
One of the key features about this gallery is that it gives space to local artists as well as those who have come to the attention of galleries worldwide. Millions of people have visited the gallery and its impressive surroundings since it first opened back in 1996, and still more are likely to go in the future too. This is also Glasgow’s most popular gallery, and once you have been you will see why.
There are lots of other galleries throughout Glasgow as well. Mainly they are smaller more intimate ones, but they might appeal to you if you have a particular love of art that they cover.
If you want to see all of them you will need more than a day to do so. Book a weekend away in the city if you can – Glasgow flights are readily available and will bring you in just to the west of the city itself. It is then just a short trip to reach the centre of the city. Once you have arrived, all that remains to do is to explore the world of art and enjoy every minute of it.
